What is Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery?
Another option for patients considering bariatric surgery is adjustable gastric band surgery. This procedure is a “restrictive surgery,” that is completely reversible and does alter the intestines. Wise Health System currently offers two types of adjustable gastric bands, the LAP-BAND® and the REALIZE® Band.
LAP-BAND® Surgery
The LAP-BAND System surgery is one of the most popular weight loss surgery options. It is minimally-invasive and reversible. During the procedure, the surgeon places a small adjustable band around the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach. None of the digestive tract is rerouted or removed during this procedure.
REALIZED® Band Surgery
The REALIZED Band also restricts the amount of food a patient can eat by dividing the stomach into two compartments. The construction of the REALIZED Band is slightly different than the LAP-BAND System. Your surgeon can help you decide with product would best help you achieve your weight loss goals.
Risks and Benefits
Unlike gastric sleeve and gastric bypass procedures, adjustable gastric band surgery does not alter the patient’s anatomy. The band itself is placed via laparoscopic surgery, which typically means a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars and less pain than more invasive procedures.
Despite being less invasive, gastric band surgery can still have risks. You should discuss possible complications and aftercare with your surgeon.
