Wise Health System provides the community with an advanced cardiac catheterization lab, the only one of its kind in Wise County.
In cardiac catheterization, a very small catheter (hollow tube) is advanced from an artery or vein in the groin or wrist through the aorta into the heart.
Cardiac catheterization can be used to check the blood flow in the coronary arteries, check the blood flow and blood pressure in heart chambers, discover how well the heart valves are functioning, and check for defects in how the wall of the heart moves.
Cardiologists perform diagnostic catheterization / angiography of the heart arteries as well as arteries in the abdomen, legs, arms, head and neck. These specialized studies of the heart help physicians determine how to handle the repair of coronary blockages, which methods to use, and the need for more aggressive intervention, such as bypass surgery.
