The birth of a little one can trigger a mix of emotions including excitement, glee, anxiety and sometimes times even depression. Most moms experience “baby blues” two to three days after giving birth. Common symptoms of “baby blues” include:
- Mood swings
- Crying spells
- Feeling sad
- Anxiety
- Difficulty sleeping or lack of appetite
If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it may be postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is not a sign of weakness or flaw but is serious and should not be ignored. Seek medical treatment if you feel you have postpartum depression.
Signs of postpartum depression may include:
- Severe mood swings or excessive crying
- Lack of appetite or overeating
- Loss of energy, fatigue or insomnia
- Severe anxiety
- Difficulty bonding with your newborn
- Withdrawal from loved ones
- Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or inadequacy
- Thoughts of suicide or death
