Neurophysiology is the branch of neurology that is concerned with the function of the nervous system.
Conditions Treated
Wise Health System provides treatment for a number of neurological conditions, including dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders and stroke. Read more about these conditions below.
Dementia
Dementia is a general term that refers to a significant decline in mental ability. Dementia can encompass a wide range of symptoms including memory loss, cognitive problems and behavioral issues. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.
Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder where the nerve-cell activity in your brain is disturbed, causing a seizure. About half of all epilepsy cases have no identifiable cause, the other half can be linked to a variety of factors, including a genetic influence, head trauma, brain conditions, infectious diseases, prenatal injuries and/or developmental disorders.
Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system. This disorder causes neurons in the brain to deteriorate. Neurons produce the chemical dopamine, which helps nerve cells communicate with one another. Patients with Parkinson’s disease experience decreasing dopamine levels as their neurons die. The decreasing dopamine levels cause abnormal brain activity, which results in problems with movement, including hand tremors.
Sleep Disorders
Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy can interfere with normal physical, mental and emotional functioning. These conditions can be caused by a variety of factors, including neurological disorders.
Stroke
Strokes occur when a blocked artery or a leaking or burst blood vessel interrupts blood flow to the brain. This interruption deprives the brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can cause brain cells to die.
Recognizing the symptoms of stroke and receiving treatment as quickly as possible is essential for ensuring survival and reducing the damage done to the brain. Following a stroke, some patients experience lingering complications, including paralysis or loss of muscle movement, difficulty talking or swallowing and memory loss.
Wise Health System is a certified Primary Stroke Center, a national designation granted to hospitals that demonstrate consistent, excellent and advanced care of stroke victims. Neurologists are often involved in diagnosing and treating strokes, as well as overseeing patient recovery following a stroke.
