Through patient education and staff dedication, the Wise Health System Perioperative Services department is committed to making our patients’ surgical experiences as pleasant and stress-free as possible.
Elective surgeries are performed Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Emergency surgeries are performed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Perioperative Services consists of:
- Pre-Operative Assessment
- Pre-Operative Holding Area
- Anesthesia
- Inpatient Surgery
- Post-Operative Care / Recovery
Pre-Operative Assessment
When an individual is scheduled for surgery, they are given a pre-operative assessment appointment. The pre-operative assessment is performed by a registered nurse.
During this appointment the nurse will obtain the patient’s medical and surgical history, and ask for a list of current medications with dosages. The patient will have lab work, EKGs, and X-rays performed, as ordered. The nurse will answer questions, explain procedures, and give the patient an arrival time for the day of surgery.
Pre-Operative Room
Our Pre-Operative Room is used to get patients ready for surgery. The nurse will bring the patient in, obtain vital signs, ascertain last meal or fluid intake, and start the patient’s IV. An anesthesia provider will visit the patient in Pre-Op to discuss anesthesia options and to answer questions about anesthesia and health concerns.
The Perioperative Services department is equipped with advanced technology and is staffed to perform a wide array of emergency and elective surgeries for the inpatient, outpatient, and same day surgery patient.
These procedures include bariatric, orthopedic, gynecological, obstetric, endoscopic, urological, ophthalmic, podiatric, robotic and general surgery. Surgical procedures are performed on the 3rd floor of the Decatur East Campus.
Anesthesia
Anesthesia is a critical component of many hospital services. 24-hour coverage for thousands of elected and emergency procedures is provided each year, including:
- Cardiac procedures including cardiac catheterizations, valve surgery, and bypass surgery
- Diagnostic tests and non-surgical procedures requiring a patient to remain motionless – including imaging or scanning procedures and gastrointestinal procedures
- Post-operative pain management to provide post-operative relief for patients, allowing them to rest, relax and recover properly
- Treatment of chronic pain
- Labor epidural analgesia for pain management during labor and delivery
Inpatient Surgery
Wise Health System performs various types of inpatient surgery. Inpatient surgery is any surgery that requires patients to remain in our care overnight or longer after the surgery is complete.
Post-Operative Care / Recovery
Wise Health System wants to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible and prevent any complications, like infections, after undergoing surgery. Our health care professionals observe, assess and treat our patients’ needs through recovery until they are discharged.
